With Surefoot reaching our 20 Year anniversary we have been reflecting on how the world has changed during that time. We live in a time where everything seems to happen at such pace that it is easy to forget just how much has happened over the past two decades.

There have been some obvious lows and divisive events throughout that 20 years. From the more recent catastrophe of the global pandemic, the controversial presidency of Donald Trump, Brexit, global recession, international terrorism and of course global warming, it has certainly not been a smooth ride.

Weigh that against all the good things that have happened such as the birth of social media and the expansion of the internet, communications innovations such as the Smartphone, the USA’s first black President, our ever-expanding journeys into space, new discoveries in medical science, the London Olympics 2012, the growth of the LGBTQ+ movement and of course Liverpool winning the Premier League!

One thing that remains a constant but ever evolving bedrock of society is music. We have travelled through the mainstream acceptance of dance music (long gone are the sweaty warehouse raves that started the movement). We have also seen the explosion of global iconic Hip Hop artists such as Jay-Z and Kanye West, the growth of Indie music led by UK artists such as The Arctic Monkeys and the continual expansion of the pop movement with the mantle being taken up by Lady Gaga and Arianna Grande. We also now take in our music from so many different channels with downloads, streaming, YouTube and Spotify swallowing up the traditional channel of purchasing vinyl and CD’s.

We have seen the emergence of new global music icons and the, sometimes tragic, demise of previous ones, but music always has the ability to excite us, surprise us and often frustrate us too! With new music so easy to discover online, our charts have the ability to be more diverse than ever before.

Who would have thought that artists such as Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Arianna Grande and McFly (yes it’s true) would dominate the music charts for a sustained period of time, or that the Rolling Stones would still be touring well into their 70’s! The last 20 years have thrown us some music gems as well as some questionable hits. Who can forget Gangnam Style by Psy, The Ketchup Song by Las Ketchup and of course Chico Time by my friend Chico (yes I actually knew Chico years before his time on X Factor).

We have taken a trip down Memory Lane by compiling some music statistics for you from the last 20 years. From the chart toppers since 2001 to those winning music awards and also the best-selling single of each year. I can guarantee that some of these will surprise you, and certainly take you back in time. There have also been some glaring omissions from chart topping lists so we would love to hear what your favourite song is from the last 20 years, and any tunes you feel have not received the recognition they deserved.

If all you take away from this is to be humming ‘Don’t Stop Moving’ by S Club 7 in the car on the way home then our job is done. Enjoy the journey!
